Long Overdue: Motown Appreciation

I recently came across this video of an interview with Bob Babbitt. At the time I had no idea who he was, but that was about to change.

After watching all the videos of him in that series, I began to seek out all the information I could on the Funk Brothers and the early Motown era music. I found Standing in the Shadows of Motown for rent and watched it numerous times.
I have been a great fan of most types of music for many years. However, I had never given R & B/Soul music much attention. I just viewed it as sugary pop and really did not give it the focus that I had given to so many other genres. As a result, I feel cheated that I did not appreciate and follow this music until now. Yes, most of the lyrics are of the always depressing (to me) love song formula, but the music is pure magic. As a bass player, I find the grooves to be of the highest quality and the archetype for all that was to follow. These musicians are top shelf and have not, even after the release of the film, gotten their due for what they created.

Lesson learned: Do not sell anything short. Get to know things/people before writing them off. Also, don't be unwilling to revisit them after a time to reevaluate my opinions. "Things and people change faster then our labels" as they say.

I'm Back...Really

OK, I have made several attempts to utilize Posterous for my benefit and maybe your's as well. Now it's time. I'm playing at our local church. I have graduated from amateur bedroom player to just plain amateur bass player. I' learning more and growing more. I could not be happier. So, watch out. This could get weird.
You have been warned.

Overhauling My Posterous and My Life

Yikes, I have not posted for months. Way to much stuff, soul searching, and general house cleaning in my life. Posterous is making a lot of head way with their service and I have decided to broaden the scope of this page to a more all encompassing journal of my existence. This will include my love of music, other arts, life, and my spirituality.
Be warned, my views and beliefs are my own and may be offensive to some. I do not like to offend, but it is what it is.

Oh Yeah!

Very hectic life lately, but finally got some bass time. Spent a couple of hours last night with one of my Real Books. Fabulous tools these things. I keep picking them up in closeout racks. I hardly know any of the songs, but they are great for learning reading and chord progressions, I am by no means very proficient at either, so the practice did me a lot of good.
Also, DOUBLE WIN, I got to play with my wife today. She is such a good musician and she really stretches my playing. I always come away form a jam with her a better musician and husband for that matter. Hoping that things will calm down in the next couple of weeks and I can really dive in again. My limited practice time has made me quite hungry for more.

Finally

Finally practiced and played. It was rough, awkward, painful, and wonderful. Can not wait to do it again tonight. Need to get back to Autumn Leaves and hit it hard. Also, need to arrange to play with my wife again. That's the best.

Update

Have not updated in a while. Not much to tell. Been hitting the metronome hard. Of course, that went a bit off when I started playing with my wife. She keeps great time, but it is more of a feeling for her. Need to work with her more. Also, leaving tomorrow for a mission trip. If you are into it you can read my other posterous journal. If you are not, that's cool too. Cheers!
